Being present and on time is an important part of student success. Excessive tardies and absences disrupt learning and may result in disciplinary action.
Students are considered tardy when they miss less than 45 minutes of a class period. Missing 45 minutes or more is considered an absence. Tardies and absences are monitored closely and consequences may include detention, Saturday School, attendance support plans, or other interventions.
Leaving Campus and Off Campus Privileges
Parent/guardian permission is required for students to leave campus during the school day, except during lunch.
Students leaving for illness must check out through the health office before exiting the building.
Students leaving for appointments must check out through the attendance office before exiting the building
Students with excused absences must leave campus and may not remain on school property.
Students returning for in-school appointments (e.g., partial or work study periods) must provide verification to be on campus.
Once on campus, students may not leave again unless properly excused by a guardian or scheduled for a partial absence.
The school maintains an open campus for lunch; however, this privilege may be revoked due to inappropriate behavior, attendance issues, or tardiness.
Lunch Break Tardy Policy
Students are expected to be in their assigned classroom before the start of class after lunch. Failure to return on time will result in disciplinary consequences following a progressive model.
A lunch detention will be assigned at the front entrance doors. Students must report to the designated detention area during the following lunch period and are expected to bring schoolwork or reading materials.
Attendance is mandatory, and failure to attend may result in additional disciplinary consequences.
Ongoing or excessive tardiness may result in additional lunch detentions, full-day Saturday School, in-school suspension, or an administrative behavioral contract, depending on the frequency and circumstances.
Students with extenuating circumstances (e.g. illness or emergency) must provide appropriate documentation or be checked in physically by a guardian and may be excused at administration’s discretion.
Consistent communication from families is encouraged if support is needed to help students meet expectations.
Unexcused Tardies/Absences & Consequences
Unexcused tardies and absences are monitored on a regular basis. Accumulation of tardies starts at the beginning of each semester.
Consequences for Excessive Tardies:
4–5 tardies in a week: 1 lunch detention
6–7 tardies in a week: 2 lunch detentions
8+ tardies in a week: Saturday School
20 or more tardies in a month: Assignment to Saturday School and placement on an Attendance Support Plan.
Consequences for Habitual Truancy:
Placement on an Attendance Support Plan
Parent/Guardian conference with a designated dean to review attendance and punctuality strategies
Placement on a Truancy Elimination Plan
Legal action including referral to juvenile court may be pursued if students and families fail to comply with compulsory attendance laws, in accordance with state law
