The Show

This year's show, titled “Mystic Legends,” contained three movements. Each was intended to provide students with the opportunity to learn a piece of music while also honing their craft and connecting the audience with a unique listening experience.

The first movement featured music from the movie Cobb, a biographical film about baseball player Ty Cobb. "This movement was interpreted as more intense, on the darker side," said director, Kate Margrave. In addition to listening to the music itself, fans might also have noticed the black, gold, and red flags used by the Color Guard, contributing to the overall sentiment of the section.

Music in the second movement stemmed from Katie Perry’s song Rise and evoked the sentiment of anguish.

Finally, the third movement contained music from the soundtrack of How to Train Your Dragon and connected listeners with feelings of amusement and joy ("How Many Emotions Can Music Make You Feel?")

The Results

The band placed 6th overall at 5A State Competition and 3rd overall in music. Scoring categories included music individual, music ensemble, visual individual, visual ensemble, music general effect, and visual general effect.

Reflections

"The kids' final run was amazing! They were in tears because it went so well," Margrave said with pride after the band competed in 5A at the state level for the first time. "We finished and I told them, 'Memorize how great and accomplished you feel right now. That's what I want you to remember. Because nothing else matters.' "
