Texts for Required Summer Reading:

The Odyssey Translated by Robert Fagles - You may acquire a paperback version, but make sure the translator is Robert Fagles. You are required to read Books (chapters) 1-4 relating to Telemachus. We will finish reading the full text during the first quarter of the class.

Description: The Odyssey is a beautiful and complex piece of literature.  As you read, annotate the text for the plot, characters, setting, themes etc. to help your understanding of the text since there are many characters and places to remember. Focus on the development of the thematic topics of identity, mentorship, and decision making. Please use the glossary and end notes after Book 24 to assist your understanding of this epic classic.  


The Other Wes Moore: One Name Two Fates by Wes MooreYou are required to read the complete book.


Description: The Other Wes Moore: One Name Two Fates is a contemporary nonfiction work that develops classic themes. As you read, annotate the text for the plot, characters, setting, themes etc. to help your understanding of the text since there are many characters and places to remember. Focus on the development of the thematic topics of identity, mentorship, and decision making.

What will you do after you read?

You will complete an in-class writing assignment about both of these required texts during the first week of school. You will be allowed to use your annotated texts and notes.
