Course Name: A.P. Computer Science Principles

Course Number: 160015 A/B

Grade Levels: 9th  – 12th

Prerequisite: Project Lead the Way Gateway to Technology III in 8th grade or Programming 1

Length: 1 year, weighted grade status

Description: Key concepts include the creative aspects of programming, algorithms, large data sets, the Internet, cybersecurity concerns, communication and collaboration, and the global impacts of computing and technology.  A moderate amount of programming is required in this course.

 Meet the Computer Science Department

Vanderbilt University logoDenise Gardiner is a computer programming teacher and the Computer Science department chair.  After graduating from Vanderbilt University she worked in industry as a computer programmer and computer systems analyst.  She then served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Federated States of Micronesia, teaching English as a Second Language.  She studied Math and Tech Education at Columbia University and Florida State University in order to become a teacher.  She has been teaching computer programming at Pine Creek since its opening in 1998.  She was awarded the Aspirations in Computing Colorado Educator Award by the National Center for Women & Information Technology in 2011 and the Colorado Technology Educator of the Year by the Colorado Technology Association in 2015.  She also does database and Java teacher training for Oracle as well as coaches competitive swimming.  Denise has a passion for Colorado, the Rocky Mountains, and the outdoors.  She spends her free time swimming, cycling, hiking, snowshoeing, camping, and traveling.


University of Northern Colorado logoJo Powell is a technology and business teacher at Pine Creek High School.  She holds a BA in Speech Communication/ Secondary Education and an MA in Educational Technology both from the University of Northern Colorado. Mrs. Powell worked for several years as a Software Test Engineer at WorldCom/MCI before returning to her career of choice:  teaching.  Over the past 13 years she has taught at Peyton Jr./Sr. High School and most recently at Wray High School in Northeastern Colorado. She has also served as an Adjunct Instructor for Morgan Community College.  She has advised several State Future Business Leaders of America officers, and helps with PCHS FBLA.   Mrs. Powell is happy to return 'home' to the front range and get acquainted with the staff and students at Pine Creek High School where she teaches a variety of Business and Technology courses.  A Colorado native, Mrs. Powell spends her free time with her family enjoying the outdoors, playing pinball, and traveling. 


University of Dayton logoSteve Errickson is the Building Tech Coordinator and a Computer Apps teacher. He began his career as a high school educator in 2000 after graduating from Virginia Tech. He worked as a Business and Information Technology teacher at Louisa County High School in Mineral, Virginia and Falls Church High School in Falls Church, Virginia. Business and Technology allowed him to gain experience in a variety of activities and subjects. He has taught courses such as computer programming, law, management, accounting, and information systems. He has served as department chair, website curator, IT support staffer, and study hall/detention coordinator. He was also an FBLA advisor. In 2009 he graduated from the University of Dayton with an MS in Educational Leadership. Two months after graduating, he and his family uprooted and moved to Germany for the next six years! During this time he completed his Ohio professional principal licensing at Ramstein High School, Ramstein Air Base, Germany. During that time he was a stay-at-home dad. Living in Europe allowed him the opportunities to travel to dozens of countries, as well as volunteer at the preschool and elementary schools in addition to interning at Ramstein High. In 2015, he and his family moved to Colorado for their next adventure. Since moving to Colorado, he's earned his initial K-12 principal license as well as his 7-12 professional teaching license with endorsements in business, technology and instructional technology. He looks forward to supporting and teaching the staff and students of Pine Creek High School and is excited to be back in the content area where it all began for him!
